The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has announced an exciting collaboration with the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), a charity working to prevent deaths and serious injuries to children from avoidable accidents.

The UK’s leading charity in child safety, CAPT was launched 40 years ago by two consultant paediatricians who, after witnessing first-hand how many accidental injuries and deaths in children were avoidable, became determined to prevent them.

Today CAPT works tirelessly to reduce the number of children needlessly killed, disabled or seriously injured in preventable accidents.

Figures from 2022 showed a 46% increase in the number of children accidentally drowning in the UK, compared to the 5-year average. With child drownings increasing, the charity is focusing on increasing awareness around drowning prevention, and therefore working closely with RLSS UK.

RLSS UK Charity Director, Lee Heard, said: “The only charity of its kind, the work of the Child Accident Prevention Trust is invaluable in preventing tragic accidents and drownings among children and young people in the UK.

“We have strongly aligned aims and objectives as organisations seeking to educate and keep children safe, and there is so much potential for our future. CAPT has already achieved so much, and we are looking forward to collaborating to share our knowledge and skills to educate more people on water safety and save lives.”

Katrina Phillips OBE, Chief Executive of the Child Accident Prevention Trust, said: “Our mission is to reduce avoidable deaths and serious injuries to children. The increasing numbers of children drowning is a real cause for concern for our charity.

“Through this partnership with Royal Life Saving Society UK, we can work together to reach more families with vital water safety education and reduce the number of young lives lost to drowning. We look forward to our close collaboration.”

The partnership will see a number of projects in 2024, including sharing and amplifying key safety awareness campaigns, exchanging research and insights intro children’s water safety and learning education resources and programmes.
